  1. Info on Elsie Cooke

We know that she was on the Empress of Ireland and arrived in Quebec City in May 1913 – according to ship records. We know in 1943 – she was still alive and not married – still going by the name Elsie Cooke. We are not clear if she went back to England or stayed in Canada. There is nothing that indicates that she knew how to speak French. She was originally from Westbury-sub-Mendip in England, a small village, with the city of Wells, England being the larger. Ship records appear to indicate that there was an Elsie Cooke on the ship from Wells and an Elsie Cooke from Westbury-sub-Mendip – seems like they would be the same person. In early 1914, her sister Nellie Cooke went to Canada, but she appears to have returned home following WWI. Elsie had been in service as a house maid in England, according to the 1911 census.

Thanks for any information. We may be totally wrong on our search. Family in England and USA have just reconnected – and have discovered new branches in the family. So we are each trying a different route in our search.
